UW Comm students fared well at SPJ’s 2013 MOE Awards
At this year’s Region 10 Mark of Excellence Awards, which honors the best of collegiate journalism from the calendar year, Daily reporters were finalists in seven categories, winning four of them.
Region 10 consists of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington with the UW landing in the “large school” category (10,000+ students). Honorees received award certificates at the Society of Professional Journalists’ (SPJ) Region 10 Spring Conference in Portland, Oregon the weekend of May 2.
“I’m really excited about the awards,” said 2013-14 Editor-in-Chief Joshua Bessex. “It feels good for SPJ to recognize the hard work everyone puts in here at the paper.”
Below is a list of the categories that The Daily was a finalist in (indicated with **), many of the students being Communication and Journalism majors:
Feature Writing (Large)
Winner: “Missing down the Grand: The unfortunate disappearance of Kaitlin Kenney” by Zeno Wicks, Montana Kaimin, University of Montana
Finalist: “Transgender Lives; Targeting Oppression; Mosaic Motherhood” by Adrian Black, Eugene Weekly, University of Oregon
Sports Writing (Large)
Finalist: “Joey Cawyer’s last wish came true” by Adam Lewis, Murrow College, Washington State University

The first-place winners competed at the national MOE competition among category winners from the 12 SPJ regions. The Editorial Staff was a national finalist in the Editorial Writing category and Joshua Bessex was a finalist in the Breaking News Photography category. The winners will be recognized in Nashville, Tennessee in September.
