Congratulations to the UW Communication Class of 2017

On June 8, 2017, more than 300 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students gathered in The Quad to celebrate receiving degrees from the UW Department of Communication. The students proudly walked across the stage as more than 2,000 friends and family members cheered them with enthusiastic applause and beautiful bouquets.

The Communication Department was honored to welcome Bryan Monroe (B.A. 1987) back to the University of Washington as this year’s Graduation Keynote Speaker. Monroe is the Verizon Chair and professor at Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication.

In his remarks, Monroe offered the graduating class “an incredibly valuable piece of advice,” one word that he guaranteed would change their lives: “perseverance.” Promising to write the students a reality check, Monroe extolled the importance of going out and grabbing what you want out of life. “When you keep fighting for the right things,” he said, “the right things tend to come your way.”
