Interrupting Voices

The Center for Communication, Difference and Equity is deeply interested in recording oral histories that address race. To that end, and in partnership with numerous communities across the University of Washington and beyond, we organized a StoryCorps event in May 2017 to generate and archive conversations between friends, loved ones, and colleagues centered on the theme of “the first time” they experienced racial discrimination.

StoryCorps is a national nonprofit whose mission is to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world.

In order to share these conversations with a wider public audience, the CCDE is hosting a series of listening parties throughout the 2017–2018 academic year.

Join us for an evening of engaged listening to individual stories of racial discrimination from within our community.

Our next listening party will be February 20th, 5:30-7:30, in the Walker-Ames Room, Kane Hall 225, University of Washington.

The following audio clips are produced by the CCDE with interviews recorded by StoryCorps. Some of the clips were played at the Autumn Quarter Listening Party.
