On October 20, the Communication Department celebrated its third annual Open House and second annual Alumni Hall of Fame.

In kicking off the event, Department Chair Gerald Baldasty noted that “a few years ago, we embarked on a concerted effort to re-engage with our alumni. We believe our alumni are a real treasure and we want to engage them in our program, and most of all with our students,” he said.

The Alumni Hall of Fame induction took place in Brechemin Auditorium inside the Music Building. During the ceremony, 11 alumni were honored for their achievements and community service.

“Alumni have provided financial resources, endowments, professorships and scholarship opportunities. Communication alumni have done amazing things. We are here to honor the alumni who have made a difference professionally, in leadership, as mentors and teachers to others,” said Professor Baldasty.

Lori Matsukawa, KING-TV anchor, said, “I am greatly humbled to be in the presence of so many top-notch communication alums: a city council member, a Pulitzer Prize winner and a former King Neptune. … I am totally jazzed!”

Patricia Foote, assistant managing editor for administration and suburban news of The Seattle Times, said she knew early on that she wanted to study at the University of Washington. “It was the only college I applied to. I also knew that I wanted a career in journalism. The Department of Communication has been part of my life: First when I was a student, later as faculty, now on the advisory committee. To be recognized by a school that has contributed so much to my career and my life is an honor, indeed.”

Evelyn Iritani, a recent Pulitzer Prize winner and reporter for the Los Angeles Times, said that “sitting on the stage with that group of talented alumni was humbling. I arrived at the University of Washington without any idea of where I was going in the world. I left, thanks to some great professors, with a passion that has allowed me to indulge my curiosity about people and my love of travel. In addition, many of the folks I met at the UW are among my closest friends, including my husband, Roger. I owe a lot to the School of Communications.”

In addition to the induction ceremony, several students made presentations in the areas of their work:

Angelo Baca, a student in the Native Voices Program, presented a trailer he had created of his documentary, “In Laman’s Terms: Looking at Lamanite Identity.”

Edith Manosevitch, a graduate student, presented a short summary of her dissertation, “Citizens’ Argument Repertoire and Media Discourse.”

Skylee Robinson, an undergraduate student in COM 220, Introduction to Public Speaking, developed an impromptu speech on the audience recommendation "Why Communication is the best major on campus.". Skylee will be one of the first undergraduate tutors in the Speech Lab starting winter quarter, 2006.

Eight students presented posters summarizing their research work. Read more about the presentations…

Professor John Gastil presented the faculty perspective, discussing researching and writing with graduate students and learning from undergraduate students.

To conclude the ceremony, Professor Baldasty said he salutes the panel of Hall of Fame inductees for their accomplishments. “We tell others that you are truly our role models. In sum: You are our heroes.”
