Your Donations at Work: The Journalism Foreign Intrigue Scholarship

The Journalism Foreign Intrigue Scholarship was established by a graduate of the UW journalism program. The purpose of this endowment is to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students in the journalism program to travel overseas to work at a foreign newspaper.

Karen Johnson, a senior in Journalism and International Studies was the first recipient of the Journalism Foreign Intrigue Scholarship. Karen worked at the Cambodia Daily as a reporting intern from June 20, 2005 to Aug 20, 2005. She covered health at the newspaper and wrote articles on a wide-range of topics. About her experience, Karen says "As you can imagine there are a wealth of topics to write about even in developed countries such as the United States. But in Cambodia, many of the health topics regard basic needs. Much illness in Cambodia is caused, at the root, by malnourishment and bad water. Things like influenza, tuberculosis and diarrhea are a common cause of death in this country. Some of the more interesting topics I've covered so far included leprosy and HIV/AIDS orphans."

After the internship ended, Karen traveled around SE Asia for 3 weeks, something that is encouraged by the Foreign Intrigue Journalism Scholarship.
