2004 UW Department of Communication Scholarship
Ceremony: Awards and Photos
On May 18, 2004, the Department of Communication handed out
$80,678.00 in undergraduate awards. The department was honored
to welcome Don Kraft, '48 representing the Fred Baker Endowment
for Professional Education in Advertising and Public Relations.
Baker award winners Anne Doherty and Anna Osgar are both studying
abroad and were unable to attend. Other distinguished guests
were Will Blethen, Treasurer, The Seattle Times; Beth
Erickson, '63; Bill McCallum, president of the NWAPA; and Stephen
Camp, representing the Wilson family.

2004 Scholarships and Winners
Fred Baker Endowment
Anne Doherty
Anne studied and did community service in Mexico spring quarter,
2004. She is a Communication major with a minor in Spanish.
She would like to work in public relations or marketing, preferably
for a non-profit agency. She has volunteered with WashPIRG and
has interned with The Frugal Environmentalist, an environmental
magazine. She has also been a note-taker for the Disabled Student
Services. Anne has consistently been on the Dean's list.
Anna Osgar
Anna is majoring in Communication and Law, Societies, and Justice.
She s interested in campaigning, political public relations,
or media law and would like to attend law school. She has volunteered
for the Wonderland developmental Center, the University Temple
Youth Homeless Shelter, and the Intensive Care Unit of the University
Medical Center. She is presently volunteering with NARAL. Anna
is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and
Women in Communications. She has consistently been on the Dean's
list.
Seattle Times/Blethen Family Memorial Scholarship
Karen Johnson
Karen is majoring in journalism with a double major in International
Studies. She is interested in the political and economic theories
of foreign policy and security – particularly as they
pertain to East Asia and developing nations. She plans to go
to graduate school to study journalism with an emphasis in documentary
filmmaking. Karen writes for The Daily and has written
for the Department of Sociology newsletter. She is a member
of Society of Professional Journalists and Asian American Journalists
Association. Karen has consistently been on the Dean's list.
Candice Richardson
Candice is majoring in journalism and would like to start her
own magazine, combining her interests in the arts with her concern
for issues pertinent to diversity. She is a member of the Black
Student Union, a volunteer assistant facilitator for the Pacific
Institute's Youth Program, and a member of the National Society
of Collegiate Scholars. She is has just been hired by Colors
NW Magazine after serving an internship with them. Candice
has consistently been on the Dean's list.
Tenika Versey
Tenika is majoring in Communication and Political Science and
plans to attend law school after graduation. She is interested
in working in political communications, perhaps as a political
analyst. She is the vice-president of Delta Sigma Theta, a National
Council for Negro Women scholar, a volunteer tutor for World
Vision/KidReach, a volunteer at the Garfield Community Center
and is member of the Phi Sigma Theta Honor Society. This summer
she will be interning with Vogue Magazine, a Conde
Nast publication. Tenika has consistently been on the Dean's
list.
Excellence in Journalism Scholarship
Lara Bain
Lara
is majoring in journalism and would like to write for a major
newspaper. She plans to travel abroad after graduation in order
to gain experience that will serve her as a journalist. She
is currently on the Dean's list.
Northwest Automotive Press Association Scholarship
Amy Rolph
Amy
transferred to the UW last fall from Bellevue Community College
where she was as editor of The Jibsheet for seven quarters.
She graduated from BCC with distinction. She is currently a
junior majoring in Journalism and Political Science and is pursuing
a career in newspaper writing. Amy is a regular reporter for
The Daily. She completed an internship with Sandusky Radio and
this summer, Amy will intern for the UW alumni magazine Columns.
Marty Wilson Endowed Scholarship
Kristina Bedford
Kristina
has a minor in Norwegian who would like to be a news broadcaster
or a field reporter . She will be studying abroad in Norway
in the fall. She has competed in various beauty pageants, which
has given her experience in performing for a large audience.
She has been on the Dean's list consistently, is a member of
the National Honor Society, is Miss Greek representative for
Alpha Xi Delta, volunteers for Children's Hospital emergency
room, and serves as a spokesperson for Gov. Locke's Commission
on Early Learning.
Bob Doble Memorial
Emily Page
Emily
is a journalism major. She writes for The Daily has
been a contributing writer for the Davis Enterprise.
She is interested in writing for a magazine or newspaper, either
as a news journalist or as an art critic. Emily is a member
of the Society for Professional Journalists, the fiction editor
for Bricolage and has consistently been on the Dean’s
list.
John and Harriet Reid Memorial Scholarship
Katherine Shaw
Katherine
works for The Daily and is a journalism major with
a double major in English. She enjoys writing features as well
as news. She would like to write for a literary magazine and
other publications to combine her other interests of music,
prose and poetry. Katherine has been on the Dean’s list
and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars
and the Society for Professional Journalists. She is also a
recruiter for Big Brothers Big Sisters and is a Big Sister mentor
to a fifth grader.
Christina Siderius
Christina is a journalism major and writes for The Daily.
she would like to write for a magazine, eventually becoming
an editor, and perhaps owning her won magazine. She is presently
editing the “UW Visitor’s Guide” and is also
an undergraduate assistant at the Dart Center. She has consistently
been on the Dean’s list.

Heather Cope
Heather
has a double major in Political Science and is a writer for
The Daily. She is interested in education and politics
and would like to have a future as a communications specialist
for an education organization or in public policy. She has been
opinion editor for The Daily and development editor
to address staff retention. Heather has interned for Congressman
Jay lnslee in Washington D.C., is a member of the National Society
of Collegiate Scholars, and has consistently been on the Dean's
list.
Stephen Johnson
Stephen
has a double major and is an honor student in Cinema Studies.
He plans to attend law school and wants to specialize in trial
law and social advocacy. He is a volunteer with Multifaith Works,
is the president of SAGE (Students Advocating Global Equality),
is an avid screenwriter and helps transport food for the Central
Lutheran Homeless Lunch Program. He is a member of the Comparative
Literature Department's Decatennial Review, and has consistently
been on the Dean's list.
Jennifer White
Jennifer
is an honor student and she is planning on attending law school.
She would like to work for an advocacy group or to be a journalist
who covers legal issues. She has worked at The Daily
and is a Daily-elected representative on the Board of Student
Publications. Jennifer is a National Merit Scholar and has consistently
been on the Dean's list. She'll be starting her thesis this
fall on censorship in scientific publishing for the Communication
Honors program.
John Impola Endowment for Journalism Education
Breeana Laughlin
Breeana
is a Journalism major with a double major in Community and Environmental
Planning. She would like to combine those interests and perhaps
do public relations for a community or environmental organization.
She is presently working as an editor for Fruit from the
Tree, a Community and environmental planning newsletter.
She also works with the City of Seattle's Office of Sustainability
and Environment on an environmental conditions assessment for
low-income neighborhoods. Breeana is a member of the UW's Earth
Club and has volunteered for the Sarvey Wildlife Center.

Blythe Lawrence
Blythe
is a journalism major writes for The Daily. She would
like to work for a metropolitan newspaper or a magazine, writing
either features or news. She has also been trained as a gymnast
and would be happy to write for a gymnastics magazine. Blythe
is involved in the Comparative History of Ideas Anthology Project,
and has interned with the GilDeane group as a researcher, editor
and proofreader. She has consistently been on the Dean's list.

Erin Ayers
Erin
is interested in personal relations or human resources in relation
to international communication. She would like to represent
the Disney Corporation, and she is planning on attending Disney
College in Orlando, Florida. She would also like to study abroad
in Rome and in London. Erin is a recipient of the U.S. Army
Reserve National Scholar/Athletic Award, is past president of
Interact Community Service Club, and has consistently been on
the Dean's list.
Theda Braddock
Theda is a Journalism major who is also majoring in Political
Science and French. She intends to go to graduate school in
journalism. She is interested in broadcast reporting, specifically
as a foreign correspondent. She would like to be on the front
lines of the world's breaking news. Theda is a member of Women
in Communications, Public Relations Student Society of America
, Society of Professional Journalists, the Center for Women
and Democracy, and L'Alliance Francaise. She has consistently
been on the Dean's list.
Jessica Eller
Jessica studied abroad in Prague spring quarter, 2004 with the
CHID program. She is interested in working in international
public relations. She would like to work for the State Department
as a foreign service officer with an emphasis on public affairs.
She plans to work and live outside the United States, Jessica
is the vice-president of Women in Communications, was formerly
ASUW representative of Sigma Kappa Sorority, a member of Phi
Eta Sigma Honor Society, the National Collegiate Honor Society,
and the Scottish Highland Dance Association. She has consistently
been on the Dean's list.
Louise Liu
Louise is in Berlin spring quarter, 2004 attending the Free
University of Berlin as an exchange student. She is a double
major in International Studies and is originally from Taiwan
but has lived abroad most of her life. Her goal is to work with
international media, such as the BBC, an international organization
such as the UN, or an NGO. During the summer of 2002 Louise
worked for the Taipei Journal and has served an internship
with the World Affairs Council as well as one with MoveOnIn
in New York. She has consistently been on the Dean's list. She
has this to say about her award: “I would like to thank
the UW Department of Communication for awarding the Ellis scholarship
to me for the second year in a row. I feel very honored to have
received the award and regret not being able to accept it in
person as I am currently studying abroad in Berlin, Germany.
In addition, I would also like to thank Professor Moy."
Dan Warner/Bob Wiley Memorial Scholarship
Jennifer Bragg
Jennifer
is studying psychology as well as Communication and is the Director
of the ASUW Experimental College. She is interested in doing
public relations for a large broadcasting company, such as NBC.
She also plans to attend graduate school to further prepare
for a job in public relations. Jennifer is a member of the National
Society of Collegiate Scholars, is a member of Education Opportunity
Program, and has consistently been on the Dean's list.
Felicia Fuller
Felicia
is interested in mass media and advertising. Upon graduation,
she would like to work as a buyer for Bloomingdale's, ultimately
going on to graduate school at Boston University to pursue a
Master's in Advertising. Felicia is a member of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority and has been awarded the Office of Minority Affairs
Merit Award for Academic Success and Achievement.
Elizabeth Heinrich
Elizabeth studied in Rome spring quarter, 2004. She is interested
in using her fluency in Italian to incorporate it into a communications-related
field. While in Italy she is doing an internship with Dwell
Magazine, based in Milan. She ultimately would like to
do public relations for a global company. Elizabeth has been
a volunteer with Seattle's Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust
Project, planting trees along highways, and has also been a
note-taker for the Disabled Student Services. She has consistently
been on the Dean's list.
Robert F. Philip Scholarship
Julie Schaffer
Julia
is a double major in Political Science. She plans on using her
knowledge of political systems as well as her writing, people,
and investigative skills to create positive social changes in
either the United States or abroad. Her interests lie specifically
in child welfare systems, education and programs to support
parents. Julia knows that writing is a crucial tool in educating
the public on issues that concern the community, as well as
an effective means of persuasion. Her past activities reflect
her interest in the welfare of young people. She has been a
counselor at a summer camp, a teacher at a summer school program,
a tutor, a nanny, a Freshman Interest Group leader and a volunteer
at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. As a student in the
Political Science Honors department, she is interested in international
politics. Julie will soon leave for Copenhagen to study the
European Union. She has consistently been on the Dean's list.
Allison Peryea
Allison
graduated this year with a degree in journalism and political
science. This is the second spring she has worked at The
Daily as a sports editor, a weekly humor columnist and
shares the baseball beat. She has worked at The Daily
for three years, mostly for the sports and editorial departments.
Last quarter, Allison worked for The Seattle Times
as a legislative reporting intern in Olympia, and she was an
intern for NARAL Pro-Choice Washington in the fall. She was
on the Dean's list during her entire time at the University
of Washington, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She plans
to attend the UW School of Law this fall, and hopes to work
as an attorney or political columnist in the future.
Jennifer Lloyd
Jennifer
is an honors student with a penchant for writing. During her
time in the UW Communications Program, she has focused on journalism
and completed internships covering the state legislature for
the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and editing books for
a local publishing house. Jennifer is currently interning for
The Seattle Times in the features and metro sections
and is trying to survive her final quarter at UW. She has consistently
been on the Dean's list.
