Communication Leadership VR/AR Workshops

Introduction to VR/AR spring Workshops are ONLY open to current UW Communication Leadership graduate students and UW Communication undergraduates.

HTC Vive and Oculus Demos | April 4 | 6 – 8 pm | CMU 226

VR and AR have the potential to transform the way that we, as storytellers, communicate with the world. But where do you start? With so many devices and experiences out there, the virtual reality ecosystem can be overwhelming. Join Greg Bilsland, Comm Lead alumnus, in a workshop covering the basics of virtual and augmented reality equipment, including:

  • Basic setup for Oculus and Vive
  • Best practices (avoiding motion sickness)
  • Controllers and haptics (tactile and kinesthetic feedback)
  • Software ecosystem (where to find and share VR experiences)

We’ll have some devices and equipment available for attendees to gain hands-on experience.

Marketing in the virtual world: How AR and VR will impact your communications career | April 11 | 4 – 6 pm | CMU 126

As AR and VR emerge, you may ask yourself, “What does this mean for my job as a marketer?” Hear from Andrew Mitrak, Comm Lead alumnus and Director of Marketing at HaptX, to learn about how VR and AR are changing the landscape of marketing and communications.

This session will focus on practical takeaways, and will cover the following topics:

  • Leveraging VR/AR and immersive media in brand marketing
  • Marketing career paths in immersive technologies
  • Building community around emerging technologies

*While we will briefly cover the technology itself, this session assumes that attendees have some familiarity with VR and AR. While this presentation focuses specifically on AR and VR, many of the key takeaways apply to marketing in other fields of emerging technology (AI, blockchain, IoT).

VR/AR Overview on May 17 | 4 – 6pm | CMU 126

Completely new to AR/VR? This session is for you! Receive a broad overview of AR/VR from Sebastian Sanchez, Comm Lead alumnus, including how it’s used to tell stories, the key players in the industry, and which software and hardware are the most popular. Explore a few case studies and try the Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear as you begin to understand how this relatively new communication channel is disrupting our industry.

Creating 360 Video content with Samsung Gear 360 and Samsung VR | May 24 | 4 – 6 pm | CMU 126
