I am Professor of English Language and Communications and
Chair of the Department of Communication and Fine Arts at
Richmond, the American
International University in London. Our university has
students from over 100 different countries and it's working
in this kind of cultural diversity which informs both my research
and my teaching. For example, I am the Editor of the international
journal
Language
and Intercultural Communication.
I was born in Australia and did my undergraduate and graduate
studies at the University of Bristol and the Institute of
Education, University of London. My work is rooted in my
background in language education, commercial training, higher
education and intercultural communication studies. I have
given papers about this work as far afield as Cairo, Seattle,
China and Mongolia.
I started using computers in teaching academic writing in
the 1980s and since then have had a growing sense that a
critical use of CMC can help in developing each student's
individual 'voice'. I also believe strongly that an exploration
of the nature of cultural identities, the frontiers between
languages, and the shifting borders between cultures, can
provide a valuable contribution to international dialogue
and collaboration.
