Change the World with Changemakers
By Tawney Briggs
Changemakers.com is an organization that uses an online forum to discuss global problems and offer alternative solutions from different perspectives. This relates to the theory of social choice in regard to media as a change agent.
The social choice perspective argues that with increased exposure to and interactions with other cultures, via media and travel, people experience different ideas and possibly better ways of doing things.
The people who participate in Changemakers are very diverse. They come from many different backgrounds, from many different countries, and make up all sorts of different ethnicities. They gather on this website to discuss their points of views on various different global issues, ranging from the environment to children's health. The organization’s website states that, “Changemakers is a community of action where we all collaborate on solutions. We know we have the power to solve the world’s most pressing social problems. We’re already doing it, one project, one idea at a time.”
One of the key ideas in the social choice perspective states is that there is value in other cultural ways of living. The people involved with Changemakers recognize this and so make connections and form problem-solving partnerships with people all across the world via media.
