Blog Action Day 2009
By Randall Floyd
On October 15, 2009 the third annual Blog Action Day commenced. There were 13,605 blogs participating. There were 156 countries represented, with more than eighteen million readers. Also getting involved were the governments of three countries: the United Kingdom, Spain, and the United States (via the White House Blog). This year’s theme was on climate change.
Bloggers from all over the world shared stories, gave information, and stated their opinions regarding climate change. Interestingly, many of the bloggers participating in this event had never written a post about climate change before.
One country that was represented was the Philippines. One blogger wrote about the recent typhoons that hit the country, painting a very clear picture of the situation, as he saw it. He told how he disapproved of how his government responded to the storms. The goal was to get the voice of the Philippines on the table for the international climate talks currently going on in Copenhagen.
However, the broader scope of Blog Action Day was stated by its organizing director: “The best possible result would be spreading the conversation to places where it is never held.”
