SPJ - freelancing event Sept. 21
( Journalism, SPJ )
-- Posted 9/17/2010
The Society of Professional Journalists Western Washington Chapter is putting on a great all-day event discussing freelancing opportunities in our region next week.
The September 21st event at the REI Seattle Flagship store is the perfect opportunity to talk to the editors you've been trying to reach for months. It's called the Freelancer's Survival Guide for many reasons. The main reason is that 18 editors from top local publications will be in attendance. These aren't just any editors. They're the ones you've been pitching for years, but are
so busy that they don?t have time to respond to every query. The list includes Paul Frichtl from Alaska Airlines Magazine, Seattle Met Senior Editor James Ross Gardner, Harbors Magazine Publisher Katherine McKelvey and AAA Journey
Editor Nicole Meoli.
The event is also a great chance to get serious about your freelance writing career because it shows you the secrets that have allowed some writers to thrive while others are scrambling for assignments. You'll learn how to break into new markets, diversify your income sources, get research tips, cultivate relationships with editors and figure out how to do financial
planning for your future.
You'll also hear from successful local writers including Candace Dempsey ("Murder in Italy"), Craig Bower (KUOW travel commentator, author of "Farts: A Spotters Guide"), Carol Tice (the ebook "Make a Living Writing"), Linda Thomas (KIRO-AM, "The News Chick) and Patricia Vaccarino ("PR for People: Be
famous for who you are and what you do").
Combine that with a editor/writer mixer featuring editors from The Seattle Times, MSNBC, Patch and Seattle Woman and you've got the makings of a potentially profitable day. The fun begins at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 21 at the Seattle REI Flagship Store (222 Yale Ave. North) and continues until 4:30 p.m. A Media Bistro event will follow. Admission is $40. Registration deadline
Sept. 17th.

help! We are hosting an entertainment writing workshop this Thursday, May

Get to know one of the most glamorous aspects of journalism. The UW doesn't

majors. Hope to see you there!
Our guests will be:

business), and is currently a James Beard Award-winning food writer and
restaurant critic, having worked forWestword in Denver, Colorado (a sister
paper of Seattle Weekly), and is now the food critic atSeattle Weekly. His
work has appeared in Best Food Writing for the past five years, and he's
written a book, Cooking Dirty: A Story of Life, Sex, Love and Death in the
Kitchen. Here is his introduction and autobio that he wrote when he began
work for Seattle Weekly just a couple of monthsago: http://www.seattleweekly.com/2010-02-03/food/meet-the-weekly-s-new-foo

Chris Kornelis
Chris Kornelis is the Weekly's music editor and has also worked as the Web
editor. He has extensive experience writing music reviews and is always
thinking of innovative ways to expand the Weekly's music blog, Reverb
(http://blogs.seattleweekly.com/reverb/). Here is just a sample of the
articles (print) that he has written for Seattle

Join SPJ Leaders: A new student-to-student mentorship program?
( Journalism, SPJ )
-- Posted 3/15/2010
Subject line: Join SPJ Leaders: A new student-to-student mentorship program
Greetings, fellow journalists:
The UW chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is looking for
motivated, hard-working student journalists who want to make a difference in
the journalism field and department before they graduate! Read more for how
to get involved in our mentorship program, SPJ Leaders, and apply
to washington.spj@gmail.com by April 2 (first week of spring quarter).
Being a mentor is a great resume builder and allows you to make a difference
in a beginning student journalist's path to graduation. Spots are limited,
so please apply soon. Applications are attached.
For those who wish to work with a mentor, membership applications will be
collected on a rolling basis. Those applications are attached as well, so
please fill out in a Word document so we can begin to match you with a
fellow student.
Note: You do not need to be a journalism major to apply, just passionate
about the field. Recent graduates may also apply.
Our mission:
SPJ Leaders, a new program begun through the UW chapter of SPJ, aims to
provide student-to-student mentorship for currently working and aspiring
student journalists, where through weekly meetings and workshops involving
guest speakers from the industry, all students can benefit from a
professional, one-on-one relationship. Mentors will work together to build a
quarterly plan for honing skills with their mentees and, when paired with
their mentees, will set goals for personalized accomplishments that they
hope to achieve by the end of the quarter. This is a mutually beneficial
relationship where mentors will gain experience coaching a peer and mentees
will perfect their resumes, network, gain interview experience and learn
journalism basics. By pairing mentors and mentees with similar interests and
experience, we hope the experience will foster a lasting relationship. This
will begin to better the journalism program for students by offering a
student-to-student mentorship for undergraduates that does not currently
exist in the department.
Mentors will be able to:
1. Meet and work with professionals in the industry.
2. Offer guidance to other journalism majors at the UW.
3. Develop a professional relationship with other student journalists.
4. Gain skills from workshops and guest speakers and panelists.
5. Build working relationships with journalism faculty and The Daily.
6. Learn and practice strong editing skills.
7. Overall, add key qualities to your resume!
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Providing guidance to aspiring journalists through resume and cover
letter reviews.
2. Assisting in the acquiring of internships through mock interviews.
3. Helping with editing stories for classes or reviewing them after they've
been published.
4. Offering advice regarding classes, internships, work, etc. based on your
own experience.
5. Acting as a link to professionals you have worked with or spoken with,
being a reference when needed in job applications.
6. Staying updated on local SPJ and Dept. of Comm events.
**Being paired with a mentor provides key opportunities to not only gain
strong writing and editing skills, but to also meet and work with possible
future employers in the industry. Fill out a MEMBER form so that we can
begin to match you with a mentor! (Also attached).
Again, the application form is attached. Thank you so much, and we look
forward to hearing from you and working with you!
Cheers,
Parisa and Rachel

Journalism Scholarships
Four scholarships totaling $8,000 are being offered by the Western Washington Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate students majoring in journalism or communications at two-year or four-year colleges in the state of Washington. Awards are for the 2010-2011 school year.
Applicants need not be members of SPJ but must intend to pursue a journalism career. A panel of journalists will review scholarship applications. Scholarship winners will be notified in May. They are encouraged to attend our annual Excellence in Journalism awards banquet, when the scholarships are formally announced. This year, the event will be on May 22 at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue.
The deadline this year is tighter than usual. The reason is the SPJ board wanted to continue this year, as we have the past several years, to offer four general scholarships. We made this decision because we know that due to the economic downturn, many students need financial assistance more than ever. However, due to the number of applications we receive, we need ample time to review and evaluate each request.
Please send the following in a single packet so that it is postmarked by March 1, 2010. Applications received prior to the deadline are appreciated. It gives the review committee more time to review the submitted materials. Please send the materials to:
Sharon Salyer
The Herald
Box 930
Everett, WA 98203
ATTN: SPJ Scholarships
Required information:
Please send the following in a single packet so that it is postmarked by March 1, 2010:
1. A letter of application, including a succinct answer to the question: “Why have you have chosen a journalism career and what do you hope to accomplish after college?” (500 words maximum)
2. A copy of your resume, including current address, e-mail, phone number, what year of college you are in, your major, what year you plan to graduate and your hometown.
3. A letter of recommendation (i.e., from a college professor or a work supervisor). Enclose it in a separate envelope in your packet. Please have the person writing the letter of recommendation include her or his phone and e-mail contacts.
4. An official transcript of all your college credits.
5. No more than three work samples (clips, audio or video).
6. You may include a statement of unusual financial need.
NOTE: Incomplete and late applications will not be considered.

Four scholarships totaling $8,000 are being offered by the Western
Washington Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The $2,000
scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate students majoring in
journalism or communications at two-year or four-year colleges in the
state of Washington. Awards are for the 2009-2010 school year.
Applicants need not be members of SPJ but must intend to pursue a
journalism career. A panel of journalists will review scholarship
applications. Scholarship winners will be notified in May. They are
encouraged to attend our annual Excellence in Journalism awards banquet,
when the scholarships are formally announced. This year, the event will
be on May 30.
The deadline this year is tighter than usual. The reason is the SPJ board
wanted to continue this year, as we did last year, to offer four general
scholarships. To do that, we had to find other places to cut our budget.
We made this decision because we know that due to the economic downturn,
many students need financial assistance more than ever.
In addition to the above scholarships, a separate $2,000 June Anderson Almquist
scholarship will be awarded to a University of Washington woman undergraduate
majoring in print journalism. If you know of a UW student who might qualify for
this award, please ask her to contact the communication department advising
office for more information.
Following is the general SPJ scholarship information:
Please send the following in a single packet so that it is postmarked by
March 28, 2009. Applications received prior to the deadline are
appreciated. It gives the review committee more time to review the
submitted materials. Please send the materials to:

number, what year of college you are in, your major, what year you plan

( Journalism, SPJ )
-- Posted 10/31/2008
If you want to be a reporter, you need to look beyond the obvious. That means digging deep and using your “shoe-leather” to find out what’s really going on.
Join the UW SPJ chapter and Seattle Times investigative reporter Ken Armstrong next Friday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m. in The Daily’s office to learn more about old-school journalism. We’ll be talking about how to make records requests, research, and generally read between the lines.
If you have any questions, call Will Mari, SPJ chapter president, at 425-890-5900, or e-mail him at wtm2@u.washington.edu. There will be a Facebook page with the latest info; search for “University of Washington SPJ chapter.”
And there will be free pizza.
