U-District Test Prep's $99 1-day GRE course, a new way to give your application
the professional test prep edge without spending hundreds of dollars or hours.
As a local start-up, formed by experienced UW instructors, U-District Test Prep

If you're thinking about just studying on your own and taking the test to see
how you do, take our course instead. It costs $51 less than having to take the
test again--and is also way more fun.

Do you need to write a personal statement for a scholarship, research or
graduate school application but aren't sure where to start? Do you need to
prepare a CV or academic resume, but aren't sure what it is or what should
be on it? Consider attending an upcoming workshop offered by the Office of
Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards:
Personal Statement Workshops
The Personal Statement is an important part of all applications for
scholarships, internships, or graduate/professional programs. This type of
writing requires you to outline your strengths confidently and concisely,
which can be challenging. These Personal Statement Workshops will provide
you with essential information to begin writing about your interests,
eligibility, and suitability.
Space is limited, so please register for one of these workshops at:
https://catalysttools.washington.edu/webq/survey/scholarq/71650
* October 21, 2009 from 1:00pm to 2:30pm, Mary Gate 191 A
* December 2, 2009 from 3:00pm to 4:30pm, Mary Gate 191 A
CV Writing Workshops
Develop your undergraduate CV/Resume for use in scholarship, fellowship,
research opportunities and graduate school applications. These workshops
will aid students in the development of a Curriculum Vitae ("CV" or
"vitae"). A CV is similar to a resume, but allows students to take
advantage of a free format, to reflect the strength of their achievements.
Students interested in the workshop should bring a working draft, such as an
existing resume, a list of activities, honors, awards, and prizes, received
no longer than 5 years ago, academic and research activities, community
service involvement, work history, and activities outside of the academic
environment.
Space is limited, so please register for one of these workshops at:

On November 6,7,8, I will be coming to Seattle to conduct a 3 Day Film
Production Workshop.
It's a Workshop I have given in many parts of the world, and would now like
to bring to Seattle.
I wish to inquire whether University of Washington would be willing to post
the attached Press Release on your website/newsletter,
thereby exposing the Workshop to your student body.
In addition, I would ask if you would forward the Press Release and Workshop
Flyer to the appropriate teaching staff.
Logging onto www.filmtvworkshops.com , you will find more detail regarding
the content of the Workshop, as well as
my 37 year film production background. You may have enjoyed some of the
movies (click - Biography / Film Credits)
Having recently completed the Workshop in Providence, Denver, and Amsterdam, it has received the endorsement of James Keblas of the Seattle Film Commission, as well as Virginia Bogert of Women In Film (Seattle).

FREE EVENT
"Women taking the lead to save our planet," seminar at the Jackson Federal Building North
Auditorium (fourth floor) at 12-1 PM on Tuesday, March 24.
Speakers include:
Kathy Fletcher – Executive Director for the People of Puget Sound
Dr. Usha Varanasi – Scientist and adjunct professor at the University of Washington. She dedicates much of her time researching with a purpose to make major policy decisions - and to pass regulations to protect the environment.
Elsie Hulshizer - Represents the Marine Water Environment on the Washington State Board of Pilotage Commissioners and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Center for Wooden Boats.
Rather than have each talk only about what they are doing to "take the lead to save the planet", they will each address the following questions which hopefully will intrigue and inspire the audience and provide a discussion of the "process" which has guided each in her professional journey:
When did you decide to dedicate your professional career to environmental stewardship?
How did you prepare for your career?
What do you consider your greatest contributions to saving the planet?
What were your greatest career challenges?
Who has inspired you throughout your career?
Do you need to be passionate about your work to truly excel?
What have you learned along the way that you wish you had known when you started?
Each will be asked to speak for fifteen minutes, allowing about five minutes for Q&A after their remarks.
*Lunch will not be provided, but feel free to bring your own

Need to develop your undergraduate CV/Resume for use in scholarship, fellowship, research opportunities, or graduate school applications? Attend the upcoming CV Writing Workshop: Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, 3:00-4:30pm, Mary Gates Hall room 211 (Honors Program Seminar room).
Space is limited; please register to secure your space at https://catalysttools.washington.edu/webq/survey/scholarq/64935!
A Curriculum Vitae ("CV" or "vitae") is a comprehensive, biographical statement emphasizing your professional qualifications and activities. A CV is similar to a resume, but an advantage to the CV format is the significant freedom to choose the headings and categories for your information and the strength reflected in their arrangement.
Bring a working draft, such as an existing resume, and a list of activities including: Honors, Awards & Prizes received no longer than 5 years ago, Academic and Research Activities, Community Service Involvement, Work History, and Activities outside of the academic environment. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to work with Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards staff to develop and strengthen a draft of your CV!

KAPLAN TEST PREP AND ADMISSIONS HOLDS FREE BUSINESS SCHOOL AND LAW SCHOOL
INSIDER SEMINARS FOR SEATTLE METRO RESIDENTS IN JULY 2008
To help prospective business and law school applicants increase their
knowledge about the competitive admissions process and prepare to
overcome the testing and application hurdles ahead, Kaplan Test Prep and
Admissions, a division of Kaplan Inc., will hold a free Business and Law
School Insider Seminar. Both events will take place in July in downtown
Seattle.
At these free events, attendees will benefit from Kaplan's inside tips on
admissions, strategies on test taking, and an informative discussion on
careers. We will provide an overview of important business or law school
trends and their implications. Additionally, experts will help applicants
reduce anxiety about preparing for the GMAT or LSAT and completing the
admissions process by providing information about admissions factors,
advice on developing a strong personal essay and a realistic application
timeline. The seminar is designed to give attendees an advantage over
other business and law school applicants.
The Business Insider Event will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on
Wednesday, July 16th at the Seattle Public Library. Panelists include
admissions officers from local MBA programs such as University of
Washington and Seattle University, a project manager from Microsoft, and
a current Business School student.
The Law School Insider event will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on
Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at The Seattle City Center, Lopez Room.
Panelists include admissions officers from University of Washington Law
School, Seattle University Law School, Gonzaga University Law School, a
current law school student and a practicing lawyer.
For more information and to register, please call 1-800-KAP-TEST or visit
kaptest.com/insider. The room assignment is available after registration.

NATPE/ UW/Student Career Workshop/ KING-TV Seattle/ Sat Oct 4 2008 / 9AM-2 PM
If you're unfamiliar with NATPE-the National Association of TV Program
Executives-it's a Los Angles based non-profit founded in 1963 by program
directors seeking a forum, and has evolved with the medium. Seattle will
be the fifteenth in the Workshop series that began in 2000, and has
traveled to New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston.
Atlanta, Washington DC, Phoenix, Miami, Denver, St. Louis, San Diego,
Austin, and New Orleans
While the settings and focus of the Workshops have been on TV
broadcasting--and of special interest to broadcast, production and
journalism students--the sessions have also been valuable for those
interested in other aspects of media and communication: two examples are
the increasing opportunities made possible by digitalization, and the
subtext of windows into the dynamics of contemporary business
Excerpts from previous Workshops are at:

POETRY IN FRIDAY HARBOR
http://depts.washington.edu/engl/cw/poetryfh.php
Led by English Dept Faculty Richard Kenney and Cody Walker, the Poetry in Friday
Harbor program is a seminar in the art and practice of poetry. There will be
lecture and discussion, reading, critique, informal chat and solitary time for
composition. All comers welcome: no experience is presumed; a wide range of
experience is anticipated.
Dates: September 8 through September 19th, 2008
Location: UW's Friday Harbor Laboratories on San Juan Island. Participants will
be housed in student quarters at the marine station, and will take meals
together at the dining hall.
How to Apply: Please send a letter of inquiry and the attached application form
to Richard Kenney (rk@u.washington.edu) AND to Cody Walker
(codyw@u.washington.edu). We've reserved accommodation for just 15 students.
We expect the seminar to fill quickly!
Application deadline: May 30, 2008. If the program fills before this final
deadline, a waiting list will be established.
*Cost: $650 (includes instructional costs, housing, and 3 meals a day)
A $250, non-refundable deposit will be due upon acceptance to the program, with
the remaining balance of $400 due no later than August 29, 2008.
Credits: Participants will receive five credits of English 493 (Advanced
Creative Writing Conference). Credits may be reassigned to cover certain
prerequisite courses in the Creative Writing track of the English major.
*Course credits will be included in students' AUTUMN 08 schedules (which may
have implications for total tuition owed, depending on how many total credits a
student takes during Autumn Quarter).
What is poetry? What are its forms and ways and means? What are its affinities
with other forms of knowing, such as natural science, as practiced famously at
the marine station? What is a poet’s relation to the natural world? Such
widely-ranging questions, and others of mutual interest, will be explored in an
experimental spirit at the point of the pencil: this is intended to be a
practical apprenticeship in the poet’s art, rather than a theoretical or
critically-minded literary seminar. In that spirit, writing will be constant and
joyful. We’ll meet twice daily, with open time between. Expect lectures and
discussion on the following topics: poetry and play, poetry and comedy, poetry
and the natural world, nursery rhymes and nonsense, tone and gesture, and the
generative nature of poetic constraints.
