Sue Lockett John teaches mass media law in the Department of Communication and is communications director for Forefront, a UW collaboration to advance innovative approaches in suicide prevention. After earning her doctorate she served as media liaison and a community educator for the Washington State Coalition to Improve Mental Health Reporting; as research and training associate for Dart West, the academic arm of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma; and Communication Law instructor at UW-Tacoma. At Forefront, she oversees external communication and works with journalists, students and the mental health community to improve public understanding of mental illness recovery and suicide prevention. Her academic research currently focuses on news coverage of mental illness and suicide. Prior to returning to the UW, where she also earned her master’s and bachelor’s degrees in communication/journalism, she was a prize-winning daily journalist and project manager for numerous Northwest publications and institutions.
