Community News Lab, or COM 362, gives advanced journalism students an opportunity to build a dynamic clip portfolio by writing for any of 25 to 30 community and ethnic newspapers and online news sites in the greater Seattle area.
These include the West Seattle Blog, My Ballard.com and its sister sites, as well as neighborhood papers such as the Capitol Hill Times, Reporter Newspapers, the Issaquah Press and numerous others. Ethnic papers include the Northwest Asian Weekly, the Jewish Transcript, the African-American Seattle Skanner and the online Latino site El Diablito.
Under the instruction of Karen Rathe, students meet twice a week to review basic skills, discuss story assignments and plan digital projects (audio and video clips, photo shoots and digital slide shows) to accompany their stories. The class also enjoys visits from professional journalists and a field trip to The Seattle Times.
