Overview
The department's facilities are organized into eight resource concentrations.
Graduate Lab. In support of their teaching, classroom, and research
responsibilities, graduate students may use the computers in CMU 322. The Grad
Lab offers students meeting spaces, 14 Windows XP stations, and two Apple OS X workstations.Software List
Media Lab 1.
Media Lab 1 (CMU 302) is the department's primary teaching and student work drop-in facility, With 27 student
Windows XP workstations and with a range of contemporary software, Media Lab 1 facilitates
flexibility both in course content and in instructional formats and styles. Software List
Media Lab 2.
Media Lab 2 (CMU 304) provides 22 Windows XP student workstations for instructional and general-purpose student
computing. Designed into four clusters, the lab encourages group activities and project. During
times when classes are not scheduled, students may freely use Media Lab 2 on a drop-in basis.Software List
News Lab.
The News Lab (CMU 240) acts as functioning news bureau that provides Editorial Journalism majors with
real-world reporting experience. The lab has 9 Windows XP media workstations. Each student covers a specific beat (politics, education, health, etc.) as he or she would at a metropolitan newspaper. Stories are edited and, in some
cases, published in News Lab client papers -- largely community weeklies in and around Seattle.
The News Lab also operates the Olympia News Bureau. Software List
Observation Labs.
The Observation Labs serve as the primary home for interpersonal and small group research and training.
Investigators and trainees can sit behind one-way mirrors to carefully and unobtrusively study the
behaviors of individuals and groups.
Research Lab.
Investigating complex phenomena that range from intimate interpersonal communication to
worldwide computer-mediated public discourse, the Research Lab develops, tests, and uses
sophisticated tools to create, evaluate, and extend theories, performances, and pedagogies. Requests for special software or equipment from graduates and faculty may be placed in this lab. Software List .
Research Mentor Center. Undergraduate students can use this space for help with writing and Communication related assignments. It is equiped with four computers, printing, and scanning ability for students to use while getting mentored by one of the departments many graduate students.Software List
Video Editing Facilities.
The Video Editing Facility provides its users with broadcast quality production gear. Operated in
conjunction the documentary producers of the Native Voices program,
the facility features an Avid and Final Cut Pro editors.Software List
