Spring Quarter, 2007

Portfolio Contents

Please use a two-pocket folder for your final submissions.

On the left side, please include

  • a cover page with your name that lists the contents, in order.
  • the essay you wrote about yourself as a negotiator on the first day of class. (These were handed back 5/22.)
  • an explanation if you missed more than four classes. All requests for absences to be excused have been approved, however a few people have missed more than four classes without extenuating circumstances. If there was a reason for this, the absences may be excused at the instructor’s discretion.)
  • OPTIONAL: an explanation of any situation or condition that might have impaired class performance.
  • OPTIONAL: extra credit review of one of the hostage negotiation readings.

On the right side, please include your writing in response to the prompts given during the last four classes. Each prompt should generate one two pages, double spaced. These can be four separate essays or one essay of no more than eight pages. I appreciate, but do not require, typing. You may include a negotiation prep form or an outcome report to illustrate your points.

  • Who are you as a negotiator now? Since the first day of the quarter, what class experiences, reading or application of negotiation skills have changed how you negotiate? (The essay should be one to two pages, double spaced.)
  • How do you prepare for negotiations? Thinking about the negotiations you have done in class, which of the required preparation questions have been the most useful in helping you with your negotiation strategy? Are there assumptions you have learned not to make (for instance, research shows most people tend to underestimate the strength of their position)? Are there any things you consider that are not on the prep sheet but have been helpful to you? What about in real life? When you have to negotiate at home or at work, how do you prepare now? Is that different than how you prepared (if at all) before you took this course? (The essay should be about one page, double spaced.)
  • What was your most successful negotiation in class? Why? What did you do differently that enhanced your outcome? What weaknesses, if any, did you discover in the other side? How did you exploit them (or why did you choose not to exploit them?)
  • Describe your experience in the Peruvian hostage negotiation. Did you like or dislike working in your group? How did the dynamics of the group work toward or against what in your mind was the best strategy? How did you navigate these dynamics? In other class negotiations or in real life, how do you negotiate as part of a team? What role do you usually play? Are there problems that recur for you in this situation? How do you apply negotiating strategies and techniques within a group in which you are negotiating?
