Communication Career Paths: Social Services

Social services careers span the range of social and human service careers in non-profit or government organizations at the city, county, state, national, and international level. Careers in social services often deal with direct, one-on-one communication with the public, and thus necessitate a strong foundation in communication.

Despite the variance in area of focus, students seeking a career in social services can benefit greatly from Social Interaction courses, which emphasize face-to-face and interpersonal communication,  and Communication and Culture courses, which focus on creating effective communication skills across cultures, societies, and diverse populations.

This career path offers a number of jobs. Some examples include the following:

  • Health care provider
  • Social worker
  • Human services assistant
  • Humanitarian

Students are encouraged to seek out courses in the School of Social Work, and may find it beneficial to look into a minor in Diversity, Human Rights, or Disability Studies.
