Communication Career Paths: Teaching

Careers in teaching can greatly vary based on if they are at the K-12 level or within higher education, and depending on their area of focus, but having a strong background in effective communication is beneficial for any student pursuing a career in teaching.

Depending on a student’s area of focus, they can benefit from classes across the department’s degree concentrations, including: Communication and Culture, Communication Technology and Society, Global Communication, Political Communication, Rhetoric and Critical/Cultural Studies, and Social Interaction

This career path offers a number of jobs. Some examples include the following:

  • College lecturer/professor/president/dean
  • K-12 teacher
  • Speech/debate coach

Students interested in teaching may also seek out a faculty member or a graduate student and assist them on their research (COM 499) or seek advice from them on their own research (COM 498) as a way to build critical thinking skills. Students may also find it beneficial to look into a minor in Education, Learning, and Society.
